Let’s be real: eating out is getting expensive. Why pay restaurant prices for wings when you can make them crispier, healthier, and way cheaper in your own kitchen?
I grab my wings from the fresh chicken section at Costco for just $2.79 a pound. I usually buy 10 pounds at a time because they are that good! This recipe is my secret weapon for getting that perfect crunch without a deep fryer.
The “Golden Rule” for Crispy Wings
The absolute key to success? Dry your chicken. I mean really dry it. Use paper towels to pat off every bit of moisture before you even think about adding seasonings. Moisture is the enemy of the crunch!
📋 The Recipe: Smart Shopper Crispy Wings
Prep time: 10 mins | Cook time: 30 mins | Serves: 2-4
Ingredients
- 2 lbs Chicken wings (flats and drums)
- 1 tsp Baking powder (The secret ingredient for skin texture!)
- 1 tsp Garlic powder
- 1 tsp Paprika
- 1 tsp Oregano
- 1 tsp Creole seasoning (for that Louisiana kick)
- Salt to taste
The Signature Sauce
- Japanese Barbecue Sauce (Bachan’s style)
- Sriracha (add more or less depending on your heat preference)
👩🍳 Instructions
- Prep the Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (or up to 450°F if your oven runs cool).
- Dry & Prep: After patting the wings dry, place them in a large bowl. Sprinkle the baking powder and salt over them first. Mix thoroughly to ensure every wing is coated—this combination is what dries out the skin to make it crispy.
- Season: Add your garlic, paprika, oregano, and creole seasoning. Toss the wings until they are evenly coated in that beautiful spice blend.
- Bake: Arrange the wings on a baking rack (over a tray). Bake at 425°F for 20 minutes.
- Flip: Carefully flip the wings over and bake for another 10 minutes until they are golden brown and sizzling.
- Toss & Serve: Once they’re out of the oven, toss them in a bowl with a drizzle of Japanese BBQ sauce and Sriracha.
Voila! You have restaurant-quality wings for a fraction of the price.
