Smart Living: How My Friend Carol Traveled the World on a Budget

Carol enjoying her life in Valencia Spain

What if you sold everything you owned, packed one backpack, and spent nearly a decade traveling the world? That’s exactly what my friend Carol did.

Carol and I originally met in Phoenix, Arizona, but in 2016 she made a bold decision: trade her “stuff” for life experiences. She sold her belongings, grabbed her backpack, and set out to see the world. Since then, she’s visited 41 countries and now calls Valencia, Spain home.

Why Spain?

Spain offers a slower, community-focused lifestyle. Instead of chasing the latest gadget or shopping spree, Carol enjoys long hikes, fresh food from the local market, and time spent with friends. Rent near the beach can still be affordable compared to U.S. standards—often between $1,000–$1,500 with utilities included.

Living Simply & Frugally

Carol’s minimalist approach keeps costs down. Living from a backpack means no shopping for extras—just essentials. She relies on rental income from properties she purchased back in the U.S., which qualifies her for a non-lucrative visa in Spain. That visa doesn’t allow her to work, so she sticks to a careful budget and makes every euro stretch.

Travel Tips from Carol

  • Best affordable country? Vietnam. Carol raves about the food, scenery, and people—all at a fraction of U.S. prices.

  • Stay in hostels (yes, really). In Europe, many hostels aren’t just for twenty-somethings. They often offer private rooms, shared kitchens, and community events—great for meeting locals and discovering hidden deals.

  • Think experiences over things. From $2 bottles of wine to $10 leather belts at the market, Spain proves you don’t have to spend much to live well.

Carol is living proof that you don’t need a big house or piles of “stuff” to be happy. Instead, life can be richer (and cheaper) when it’s filled with experiences, community, and adventure.
